WELCOME SERVICE
A Happy New Year to you all!  Our first Circuit event of the New Year is on Wednesday 10th January.  This is where we welcome Gordon, Julie and Emma officially to this Circuit.  The service will be held at Brimington starting at 7:30pm, with the preacher being our Chair of District, the Revd Vernon Marsh.

MAUREEN’S DIARY
In November’s Vision Maureen told from her diary some of the experiences she had during her visit to Romania in June of last year.  She continues telling the story.

Tuesday 20th June We went to the City Hospital in Oradea to visit the abandoned babies. It was a very old concrete tower block, inside very drab and depressing with it's starkness. We got the lift to the second floor and went to the wards where some of the babies were crying, so we picked them up and cuddled them.  A nurse came with their bottles and we fed the babies a mixture of liquidised carrot for the older ones and a strange off white mixture for the youngest babies.  One I particularly remembered was baby Mark with ginger hair who was about six months old (he was the size of a three month old baby).  When you cuddled him and talked to him he had such a lovely smile and that was the amazing thing about all the babies we saw, as soon as you cuddled them they gave you such beautiful smiles.  I had thought that this was just wind but their eyes lit up and they did respond.

All the babies were special, we cuddled as many as we could before going up to the fourth floor to visit the toddlers in a room that Smiles had set up for them. Then it was back to the second floor to visit some more babies. I will never forget those babies or their appalling lack of food and human contact and of all the visiting we did this was the most heart breaking one.

Wednesday 21st June We went to Tileagd School and then onto the Nursery. The school had broken up but this was a Special Summer School where the children worked on their lessons that they were struggling with first, then they had fun things to do. The headmaster and all the staff were very good with the children especially when the children were dragged out to have their photos taken.

We took some balloons that giving every child one to play with. The children loved them especially letting the balloons down and make them squeal!  I backed out of that classroom very quickly, glancing at the teachers who smiled and rolled their eyes up to the ceiling!!

We gave out lots of pens, crayons, felt tips, pencils sharpeners and writing paper which Hall Road had collected for the School.  Next stop was the Nursery where again every child was given a balloon.  I only wish you could have seen their little faces as they ran around playing with their balloons. The Nursery had its own kitchen, showers, cots and outdoor play area all of which was built a few years ago by the mission construction teams.

Then it was time to go to the Gypsy Village where we were met by Kevin from the Smiles Foundation and taken by mini bus to Bratca, a place near the mountains where people with physical and mental disabilities lived. Before Communism failed these people were put into this institution and left there to die.  The authorities would send soldiers in to see if any had died and see that they were buried.

Kevin told us that a Doctor had rung him saying that all the inmates had to eat was bread. The Doctor got the sack for informing Smiles. Smiles took food and built a heating system and a day room away from where they had previously spent all their time.

They flourished and today they have a better life because of Smiles Sponsorship.  This had been the hottest, and the longest day, with a nine thirty start and a seven thirty finish.

The offering from the Circuit Carol Service raised £140 for the Smiles Foundation.
