SISTER ELIZABETH

It is with great sadness we hear of the death of Sister Elizabeth.  She was born and brought up in Bradford.  Following her call she trained as a Deaconess in 1946, being ordained in 1951.  After serving in Manchester, she came to Chesterfield training as a social worker, working out her ministry within that sphere, retiring from the active ministry in 1979.  Many have been touched by her ministry through her writings, often being published in People’s Friend and such like.  Her home ministry continued with a weekly Bible Study/Prayer Meeting that was appreciated especially by members of Barlborough.  We thank God for her life and her willingness to serve Him throughout.

WORDS OF WISDOM

The distinction between Christians and other people does not lie in country or language or customs….  They follow local customs in clothing, food, and in the rest of life; and yet they exhibit the wonderful paradoxical nature of their own citizenship.  They live in their own countries, but as if they were resident aliens.  They share all things as citizens and yet endure all things as if they were an underclass.  Every foreign country is their homeland and every homeland a foreign country.  They marry like everyone else, and have children: but they do not abort their young.  They keep a common table but not a common bed.  They live in a world but not in a worldly way.  They enjoy a full life on earth, but their citizenship is in heaven.  They obey the appointed laws, but they surpass the laws in their own lifestyle.  They love everyone-and are universally derided.  They are unknown-and roundly criticised.  They are put to death-and gain life.  They are poor but make many rich.  They lack all things and yet have all things in abundance.  They are dishonoured and are glorified in their dishonour….  They are abused and they call down blessings in return.  When they do good they are beaten up as ne’er-do-wells: when they are beaten up they rejoice as people who are given a new life….  In short, what the soul is in the body, the Christians are in the world.  The soul lives in the body but is not confined by the body, and the Christians live in the world but are not confined by the world….  God has appointed them to this great calling, and it would be wrong for them to decline it.

PALM COURT TRIO CONCERT

Barrow Hill Methodist Church is again to be visited by The Robin Johnson Palm Court Trio.  The concert will be held on Saturday 12th at 3pm.  It was with great sadness that we learned of the death of Audrey Cardus the trio pianist for many years, during 2007, but we have been told the new pianist is now available.  As usual an exciting and entertaining concert is expected and again as all previous occasions there will be a strong demand for tickets.  Book your ticket so as not to miss out on one of the church’s most popular events.

The trio consists of Robin Johnson (violin), with Hugh Finnigan (piano) and Mavis Barnes on cello.  Soloist guest singer is Gwen Knight (soprano).  Tickets are £7 and includes a buffet.  Cheques payable to Barrow Hill Methodist Church and sent to Hazel Wainwright, 5 Victoria Grove, Brimington Common, Chesterfield S43 1QR or call 01246 270550.
